Everything about this encounter has been unholy. Dorothy, angrily, says so.
“You ought to be ashamed of yourself! Frightening him like that, when we came to you for help!” But Oz isn’t through.
But Oz interrupts, screaming, “Silence, whippersnapper. The beneficent Oz has every intention of granting your requests!”
But there will be a catch. A big one.
“But first you must prove yourself worthy by performing a very small task. Bring me the broomstick of The Wicked Witch of the West!”
Here the heard of the matter is revealed. Oz the great, the powerful, the beneficent, is also Oz the fearful. Tyrants and bullies always are. Fear enthroned is far uglier than cowardice face-down on the floor.
“You know how the rulers of this world lord it over others?” Jesus asked. “How their great ones make their importance felt? It must not be that way with you. The one who wants to be first must serve the others.”
The Wicked Witch would kill to get those powerful ruby slippers and The Wizard will try to turn innocent people into killers all for the sake of an enchanted broomstick. The Cowardly Lion sees where this is all heading and asks, “But what if she kills us first?”
Oz doesn’t give a damn. “I said GO,” he blares.
